Draconian Laws Must be Immediately Repealed in Kashmir: KAC

Washington, DC, August 29, 2011. The Board of Directors, Kashmiri American Council (KAC), is appalled at the recent gruesome report of 2,700 bodies. This blatant disregard for the sanctity of human life is just another reminder of the tremendous sacrifices the people of Kashmir are enduring.  The Board calls on the International community to condemn these atrocities upon the innocent Kashmiri people, organize a UN tribunal to ascertain the gravity of the tyranny and allow the will of the people of Jammu & Kashmir to be ascertained in a free and fair plebiscite to decide their future.

The situation in Indian occupied Kashmir has become increasingly deadly with human rights abuses ongoing unabated.  Recently, anIndian police team, operating under the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), completed their report that verified the horrific discovery of 2700 mass graves. This eye-opening report confirms, despite claims by other Indian officials that graves contain bodies of ‘Pakistani militants’, that 574 bodies have been identified as disappeared locals.  Moreover, 17 bodies have already been exhumed and returned to mourning family members.

Statement Of Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai

It has been my lifelong commitment to the people of the State of Jammu & Kashmir, irrespective of their religious background and cultural affiliations, to help achieve the right of self-determination to decide their future. God willing! I will continue to do that in days, weeks, months and years to come.

Given the traditional support of the United States to the basic principles of fundamental freedoms and democratic processes;  Given the personal vision of President Barack Obama about the region of South Asia which includes Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Kashmir;  Given the traditional bipartisan expression of support by the United States Administration to the issue of Kashmir that ‘India and Pakistan must resolve the issue of Kashmir after taking into account the wishes and aspirations of the people’; and given the indigenous, non-violent and peaceful nature of the movement initiated by the people of Kashmir, in particular since June 2008 and thankfully sustaining that until today, I say with fullest possible consciousness that the people of Jammu & Kashmir have no reason to fear that the world powers in general, and the United States in particular, will let them down.

President Abraham Lincoln has said it the best, “The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.’

Chicago. July 3, 2011. "Since the Obama Administration has engendered fresh hopes for the strengthening of world peace and democratic values in the Middle East and beyond, we would like to bring to his attention the 64-year old Kashmir dispute to which India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir are parties. The Kashmir question is joomplu:121one of the oldest unresolved international problems in the world. It is imperative, whatever be the rights and wrongs in the equation that real populations with a pronounced sense of identity, with their suffering and their aspirations rather than just legal title and merit are involved," said Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Executive Director, Kashmiri American Council/Kashmir Center during a panel discussion at Rosemont Convention Center, Chicago, during the ISNA Convention, entitled, "Kashmir Dispute: Post Obama's Visit to India".
